Accident insurance and critical illness insurance are two plans offered by Unum that provide additional financial security in the event of an accidental injury or a serious illness. The plans pay money directly to you to spend any way you’d like. You can use the cash to pay out-of-pocket medical expenses, your mortgage, or even for someone to do your grocery shopping while you recover.

You can choose to enroll yourself and your spouse or domestic partner and children in one or both of these plans as a new employee or during Open Enrollment. There is no preexisting condition clause, and there are no health questions to answer.

Accident insurance

If a sports injury means a trip to urgent care, or a bad fall lands you in the hospital, accident insurance can help pay for those bills and any other expenses as you recover. Benefits are paid regardless of your other insurance coverage.

A range of incidents are covered, including:

  • Burns
  • Broken bones
  • Concussions
  • Eye injuries
  • Dental emergencies

Benefits are determined by the type of injury and the treatment you receive. Review the schedule of benefits.

Critical illness insurance

Critical illness insurance pays you a lump-sum payment when you are diagnosed with certain conditions, including cancer, stroke, heart attack, loss of sight, hearing or speech, or serious diseases such as Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis. See the covered conditions.

You can receive benefits for an additional illness or recurrence of the same covered illness after a 180-day waiting period.

Be well benefit

Each family member who has critical illness coverage can receive $50 every year for getting a covered screening test, such as an annual physical, a cancer screening or a cholesterol test.

Coverage levels

Choose coverage of $10,000, $20,000 or $30,000 for yourself. Your children up to age 26 are automatically covered at 50% of your coverage level, and you can add your spouse or domestic partner at 50% of your coverage level.

You pay for this plan with after-tax payroll deductions, so any benefits you receive are not taxed when a claim is paid.

Your cost per pay period

Your contributions depend on the coverage amount you choose and the age of you and your spouse or domestic partner, if applicable.
